NDLEA probes Arik attendant caught with N105m cocaine

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Tuesday night stormed the headquarters of Arik Air in Ikeja Lagos following the arrest in London of a crew member of the airline for allegedly being in possession of cocaine.
The Arik crew member, identified by the anti-narcotics agency as Chika Egwu Udensi, was arrested on Monday night by operatives of the United Kingdom Border Force with 20 kilogrammes of cocaine in London.
The NDLEA agents were said to have searched Udensi’s latest Range Rover parked on the airline’s premises. Arik spokesman, Adebanji Ola, confirmed the visit by the NDLEA’s operatives.

Udensi was arrested at the London Heathrow Airport shortly after an Arik Air flight W3101 that departed from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, touched down in the UK.

2 years ago two crew members of the Arik Air were similarly nabbed by the UK Border Force in London for the same offence.

Officials of the NDLEA on Tuesday put the street value of the drug found with the suspect at £350,000 (N105m).

Arik Air on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of its cabin crew member by the UK Border Force.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, on Tuesday ordered investigation into the operations of Arik Air following the development.
The Nigerian anti-narcotics agency in a statement said that it had notified the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom of the arrest.

Giade said
“The agency will carry out full scale investigation into this case to ascertain those behind the criminal act. We shall work closely with our international collaborators on the matter. Arik Airline will be sanctioned if found wanting.
“The agency shall invoke section 25 of the NDLEA Act against the airline, which states that it shall be the duty of every commercial carrier to take reasonable precaution to ensure that its means of transport are not used in the commission of offences under this Act.
“Every commercial carrier is expected to comply with appropriate security measures at points of entry and exit in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and other customs control areas, to prevent unauthorised cargo in its means of transportation.
“The law refers to the precautionary measures to include training of personnel, promotion of integrity of their personnel, submission of cargo manifests in advance, use of tamper-resistant, individually verifiable seals on containers and reporting to the agency at the earliest opportunity all suspicious circumstances relating to drug trafficking.
“Nigeria has a cordial working relationship with the United Kingdom in drug control. This has resulted to a drastic reduction in the number of arrests made in the United Kingdom from flights originating from Nigeria over the years.”

How much is the salary of a cabin crew to be able to cruise a Range Rover?!
Does Arik air not monitor the lifestyle of its workers?

This cocaine thing must be some racket. How can someone get 20Kg of cocaine aboard a flight if many people are not involved? From the FAAN people, to the people who watch the plane when it is packed, to the cleaners, dem suppose carry everybody.

OMG! I know this guy. He attended to me on a local flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt last year October. He was so cool and kind and even offered me a business class seat as i didn't like the seat assigned to me. This is so sad. He's too fine to do time.

Cabin crew member owns a range rover...the coy is meant to have suspected foul play. Everyday for the thief, one day for the owner. Good for him...#tongue out, eyes popping#

Unknown said...

Now I can see why he's so cute and dapper....drug money!
I think Arik Air needs to be thoroughly investigated, how come it's only their staff that keeps getting arrested for drug related offences?
How come the airline couldn't investigate how an ordinary cabin crew was able to purchase a range? On top how much salary?
How come Arik are the ones investigating how the staff got the cocaine and not NDLEA?
Fraudulent airline with fraudulent staff!

And the guy owns a Range Rover, i guess people would have been hailing him for years for his hardwork and ability to live that good out of being a flight attendant. The Bible is life and fully complete and wasn't mincing words when it said the love of money is the root of all evil. Please and please, desist from doing or selling drugs. It ruins your life eventually. Be pleased and satisfied with what you have now and work towards a better future.

You are right Chinedu. However this is becoming embarrassing and one way of checking this is if government provides better incentives/rewards to Nigerian airline crew members if they reveal information on individuals who approach them to peddle drugs. This guy has ruined his career

Arik male crew are either into drugs, gay, or beggars.

Anonymous said...

He definitely messed up with his decisions to cut corners but Arik underpay their staff compared to all their colleagues and competitors in the industry and owe them up to four months of salary sometimes, they have not been paid as we talk now for July and some even June without any knowledge of when they will pay them. the welfare of their staff are very poor and when staffs are taken through such conditions there are chances of having to deal with issues like that though its not an excuse. I will like the government to also probe the welfare of these staffs by Arik as this would help to resolve such problems from the root/cause.

In life we all have a choice to make,be it good or evil. We shouldn’t use one man’s crime or sin as a yardstick to judge d lot. I say dis with regard to d company in question. That in the history of arik air three cabin crew members have been caught with drugs in the UK doesn’t make d company a bad compan. It’s simply d wrong choices made by d said individuals.I’m sure there are a lot more crew who have turned down such opportunities. It happens in all airlines around d world. The amazing south African airways have had a good number of their cabin crew and even pilots trafficking drugs and yet the people do not paint d airline as a bad airline, that’s because they know it’s down to d choices d individuals make.
Being in d aviation industry I know that drug barrons will always contact crew members because of the relaxed method of scrutiny they go through. If u are there u never know Wat u wld do wen presented d golden Apple. So pls do not be too quick to judge d poor arik community because it is just a reflection of what our great nation Nigeria has become. No integrity. If I remember correctly we do have a serving legislator who is wanted in d us nd he is a celebrated figure in nigera. Finally in every 12 there's always a Judas so please dear people do not condemn d airline cos of d greedy actions of a few, there are great men nd women toiling daily to make d airline go higher.

I know this guy very well. He was my classmate at Government College Umuahia and we also met at Abia State University Uturu where he studied Urban and Regional Planning and graduated maybe in 2000 or 2001 (not too sure).

He has been on the fast lane ever, having joined the Vikings also in the university and was also one of the top men who go about to rape girls and terrorize other students. Though in the university then, he was also involved in musical show business.

I didn't know he continued with such fast lane life after he graduated. He has met his waterloo but I pray he comes out from this and learn his lessons. I pity the family and encourage the family to keep praying for him.

We should even be thanking God that this incident did not happen in Asia. He would have been condemned to death automatically.

This should also serve as a lesson for the younger generation who may come across this. life is not all about making money. Now he has put his name, name of his family and country in drain!! If found guilty, ofcourse he wouldn't serve anything less than five years in prisonment. Do we deserve all these just because we want to make money?

JESUS CHRIST is the only way for us to live a comfortable life on earth!! He who has ears, let him hear!!!

Only in Nigeria! Arik Air Pilots and entire staffs owed 3months+ salary and some Pilots go on strike! Rather than negotiate or beg the management tries to victimize pilots and carries on with impunity! NCAA clearly stated that any airline found erring and owing more than one months salary will be shutdown till they make amends. Discovery was shutdown but Arik? Your guess is as good as mine....... Imagine your Pilot flying you in the flight deck grumbling and thinking about the bills he owes rather than concentrate on his or her flight? The cabin attendants, ground staffs made to endure harsh working conditions and expected to eschew professionalism yet no on-time remuneration! There's one law for the airlines and it seems one other law for Arik. Well like I said only in Nigeria. Wish you guys the very best and safe skies! ~ Anonymous
